2004-06-01; Winners of First Annual Farzad Naeim Prize Announced for Best Report Contributions to EERI/IAEE World Housing Encylcopedia
The Selection Committee has made the following awards for the First Annual Farzad Naeim Prize for the best report contributions to the EERI/IAEE World Housing Encyclopedia: 1.Cyprus --Reinforced concrete frame buildings with unreinforced masonry infill walls (V. Levtchitch, contributor. $1,500 award); 2.Italy--Single-family historic brick masonry house (Dina D'Ayala, Elena Speranza, Francesco D'Ercole, contributors. $1,000 award); 3.Peru--Adobe house (Cesar Loaiza F., Marcial Blondet, Gianfranco Ottazzi, contributors. $500 award). Because this is the first award of an annual program, the selection committee placed stress on seeking commonly found housing types, built in large numbers, that have experienced strong shaking in the past. The winning reports were thorough and well-illustrated, highlighting the causes of failure if performance has not been good and the features that resulted in good performance where that applies. In addition, the selection committee wished to provide a broad geographical representation. The Selection Committee consists of Chris Arnold, United States, Chair; CVR Murty, India; L. Teresa Guevara, Venezuela; and Vanja Alendar, Serbia/Montenegro.
