Helen Crowley is the Deputy Secretary General and Executive Committee Risk Coordinator of the GEM Foundation, a non-profit organisation that leads a collaborative effort to provide organisations and people with tools and resources for transparent assessment of earthquake risk.

Helen has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London, and received her MSc and PhD in Earthquake Engineering at the ROSE School (Pavia, Italy). Since 2006 she has been involved in national and international projects on seismic risk assessment, which included various research activities related to developing empirical and analytical fragility and vulnerability models, developing building inventory databases, seismic risk assessment of school buildings, ground motion modelling within loss models, and loss modelling for economic losses and fatalities.

Her current role as Risk Coordinator of the Global Earthquake Model involves the coordination of the development of open source seismic risk software (OpenQuake) and of international consortia developing standards and databases for global exposure / vulnerability / consequences data / tools for data capture. Her affiliation to the European Centre of Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE, Pavia, Italy) has led to her coordinating a number of work packages in European projects on engineering requirements of seismic hazard, fragility functions for European buildings, and European building inventory modelling.

She is an author/co-author of over 90 publications (31 in peer-reviewed international journals) since 2003 in the field of earthquake engineering, with specific emphasis on seismic risk and loss assessment. She has a H-index of 13 according to Google Scholar and 10 according to Scopus. She serves on the Editorial Board of Earthquake Spectra, and is a reviewer for a number of international peer-reviewed journals.
